The Wedding of the Year – Part 2

ABOUT FANN…

I’ve never really had the chance to work with Fann on any drama. The closest encounter was in the drama MAKING MIRACLES, where she played a doctor and I, a nurse, but still I didn’t have any direct scenes with her. She always strike me a very strong woman, for working the way she does, putting in the number of hours and still always looking so radiant. I admire her for her poise and charisma because there’s something about her that draws you in yet leaves you hanging for more. She is the role model for the rest of us in the industry.

ABOUT CHRIS…

I’ve worked with Christopher on BEACH BALL BABES. We weren’t close, but I could tell, he’s very much in love with his wife from the way her name hangs on his lips quite often. I like that when he was interviewed last night whether or not it was tedious preparing for such a massive wedding that he was forthright about it being tough as opposed to giving a politically pleasing answer. He’s charismatic to women and still remains a guy’s guy. He has good camaraderie with his co-stars and strikes up rapport with the crew and director off camera. He’s the guy everyone enjoys working with.

ABOUT THEM…

There is something inspiring about their relationship because it must not be easy being two high profile celebrities, who not only have to put up with media attention but also have to endure the trials and tribulations of being separated when one is filming in a foreign land for months at a go. When I see the two of them in the make-up room, there is something magnetic about the chemistry they share just being side by side that makes me embarrassed to be even breathing the same air. That’s what love in the air is like. It taught me that love can be without words.

There is hope that we will all find the right one someday too.

I wish them all the best in their careers and family building.

wedding20

Irene had one of the toughest jobs last night as one of the hosts for the wedding of Chris and Fann.

wedding42

Bryan Wong was my table partner. There were photographers taking photographs of guests and developing them on the spot for us.

wedding25

It was very hard to catch a picture of the couple because they were always surrounded by their entourage, photographers and excited guests.

wedding23

Belinda Lee and Trey, freelance stylist.

wedding22

Trey is the funniest person I know and we always have a good laugh every time we meet.

Belinda Lee and I were filming the long drama YOUR HAND IN MINE just before the wedding dinner.

I love Jin-jie's outfit. The shade of green looks good on her. Here's how to look oriental and still remain elegant.

Here's a warped picture of Karen and I because I tweaked the settings on my camera. I thought this was quite cool. I love her outfit from Balmain. She got it from Paris!

wedding28

Another happy couple! I love seeing blissfully married couples, they make me cry!

wedding36

Thomas used to be my managerial executive when I was still a newbie. It was so good to see him!

wedding33

Patricia (left) bantered with Irene Ang on stage for a bit. He Yong Fang (right) used to host City Beat with Bryan Wong when I was still in primary school. I remembered because I bumped into them at the Science Centre once and she obliged a photo with my classmates and I.

Dr Georgia Lee and I, both in blue. :)

Jesseca came over to sit with Dawn and I after the second course was served. It was nice to have girls' talk. Haha!

I was lucky to be able to sneak a picture with the beautiful bride before she was whisked off to the next table. Her happiness is infectious!

Wedding of the Year – Part 1

It was the Wedding of The Year as we celebrate the marriage of Christopher Lee and Fann Wong, and true to its name, I was completely awed by the effort put into organising this massive wedding. As I walked to the ballroom of Shangri-La, where the wedding was held, the lobby was quiet and there were even hotel staff holding placards to another event.

I was not ready for what was to come.

If you’ve been to Shangri-La’s ballroom, you will know that there a little “runway” which leads to the ballroom where panels lined the side and hotel staff stand by each panel to greet and usher you in. Last night, that turned into the Hall of Fame. At the end of this “runway” were throngs of photographers and journalists all camped out in a nice corner, taking photos, videos and interviews of the guests who arrived. You almost can’t slip into the reception unnoticed, unless you turned up late of course.

Into the reception and recording of 《芳心有李》, a variety show dedicated to tell the story of the lovebirds right up to their wedding day, was already in progress. There were bottlenecks everywhere, and mind you, the reception area is huge! Everyone was just catching up with one another, old friends, old colleagues. I was quite overwhelmed, it’s like you see so many people you know, but you don’t have time to properly say hi to one before another familiar nudge turns you around to yet another familiar face.

The dress code for the night was glamorous. Long sweeping gowns, beautifully done-up hair and extensive jewelry display. People you meet at work who don’t normally have make-up on now look completely different with make-up and shoulder-baring dresses. It was a gorgeous night to celebrate the union of a gorgeous couple.

I have over 40 pictures to share, but right now, I can only show some as I edit and compile the rest of it in the next entry. Look out for it!

The ballroom was transformed into a rather magical land. Regardless of what the intended theme was, I felt like Alice in Wonderland.

wedding9

These table decorations remind me of the magical woods. Something out of an Enid Blyton book when I was a kid.

wedding10

The newly-weds. With so many people crowding around them at each time, we get a better view from the two large screens placed on each end of the ballroom.

wedding11

"Half-time", we got out of the ballroom for a breather. Here's Jesseca and I.

wedding5

They have a standee of them! With so many guests invited, those who didn't get a chance to pose for a picture with the real couple had an alternative. Haha! Reminds me of the caricatures from their movie THE WEDDING GAME, except this one looks more like them!

wedding6

Here's a group of people who work long and hard, behind the scenes, on a typical work day in MediaCorp.

wedding12

Justin's the stylist for my long drama YOUR HAND IN MINE. He gets me the beautiful clothes you see me wear on television for the drama.

POSSE with love

posse3

When I was much younger, I had no idea what getais were about. I would go along if my parents brought me. This one time was memorable. The stage was set up just under my block, and I vaguely remembered it didn’t have a huge set-up, or singers with elaborate costumes like those I saw in the movie “881″. Maybe it wasn’t that profitable in my area. Whatever it was, they ran out of gigs for the night and the emcee decided to open the stage to the public for anyone who would like to go up and sing. My parents egged me on. Partly because they’d heard me sing karaoke at home regularly to the oldies they bought, and partly because I think my dad wanted to have fun with me. In retrospect, he said he didn’t think I would do it. I must have been about 10, 11 or 12 years old.

I’m no stranger to performing on stage, because I’ve always been part of school acts since kindergarten. In primary school, I even came up with cheesy choreography to Disney theme songs and performed with my classmates to the entire school on special occasions. But I’ve never sung on stage before. Still it didn’t bother me and I didn’t think it was going to be any different from what I’d done before. I bravely asked the music guy if he had my favourite song, and he did. Oblivious to how I would sound, or what people would think, I went on stage, dressed in T-shirt and shorts and slippers, and sang 《我这样爱你到底对不对》(Is it right for me to love you?). Come to think of it, it must have looked quite funny, a little girl singing an adult love song!  But there was absolutely no pressure, and thankfully also no boos that night.

Thinking back to those days, it seems like growing up somehow destroyed that part of me that would just go ahead and do something without worrying about other people’s judgements. I never really had stage fright, but now as an adult the stakes are higher. Every public performance is fraught with concerns from everyone involved and inevitable stress arises. So much so that it can take away the fun of entertaining.

It’s been many years since that maiden stage singing experience, so naturally I was scared out of my wits for last weekend’s performance for POSSE at Plaza Singapura. You might think that after so many years of being in this industry, such performances are nothing unusual, I’m telling you, experience doesn’t make it any less unnerving. For many years, I’ve had more people discourage me from public singing than prod me supportively like my parents did back then. Discouragement breeds fear and insecurity. Maybe it’s in our Asian culture not to “lose face”, but the obsession with preserving “face” comes at the expense of shattering personal confidence.

When I went to see my teacher, my cracked confidence showed in my performance. I was too afraid and couldn’t simply let go and trust my own voice. She had to tell me not to beat myself up based on demoralising comments given to me by people who weren’t necessarily in a better position to comment. It sounded a bit harsh when I first heard it, but that’s the kind of person she is. She won’t leave me any mercy if it is the truth. I was reminded once again to be discerning to what others say. The odds will always be against us, but it is what we make of it.

Last Saturday, I went up on stage and sang “Love Story”, in spite of much deterrence. I am almost relieved to have gone ahead with it. I want to be true to the people who were there to support me and it doesn’t matter that I wasn’t pitch perfect (I’m not trying to sell albums here), because I know I gave my best.

Sure, there will always be room for improvement. That way, we all have something to look forward to next time. :)

In Penang with Pierre

Pierre Png and I were at Queensbay Mall in Penang some time ago for the promo of “Yours Always”. It was an early flight that morning and right after we arrived in Penang, we had breakfast with the Malaysian crew who were at the airport to pick us up, and then headed back to Krystal Suites Apartments for a short nap before getting ready for the event.

We had an interview lined up after the event and fans were following us as we made our way to this cafe. The girls even followed me into the restroom, which was a first for me. I do appreciate the support but it was a bit awkward. Haha! Here we are finally settled down for the interview with the local paper.

I was at KL for a promotional event for “Yours Always” and although the itinerary was packed, we had some time to kill upon arrival due to some last minute cancellation, so we went to KLCC for some early shopping! It was my first time in KLCC because although I’ve been to KL, it was mostly for work, and am usually left with no time to go shopping. Haha, I think if I had more time, I would go on a spree!

匆匆逛了一圈之后,我们快快吃了午餐,就赶到 Harmonic Studios 化妆弄头发。

It was straight to the airport after the event.

Unfortunately, I missed the National Day parade and pledge but while I was on the plane, I sat next to a Londoner who was on his way back to London and would be transiting in Singapore. He spoke fondly of Singapore and less of London. In his words, he said, “I wouldn’t want to live in London if you pay me, but pay me nothing and I would live in Singapore.” I guess we are a very inviting nation and I give my best wishes to the country as we continue to progress as one.

Pierre Png and I would be going down to Mines Shopping Fair, KL on August 9th (3.30pm-4.30pm) for the promo of “Yours Always”, an 8-part idol drama that was shot some years back. Have you bought your copy of Style yet?

I really appreciate the team for choosing me for their August cover, because we all know that August is the month of Singapore’s birthday and as Singaporean, I hope to do my country proud, in some small way or another. The editor’s note was perhaps the most comforting to read because it was genuinely forthright. Melissa did a write-up of me that I’ve never read of myself before in any other publication, so it is really a huge compliment. Thank you, and thank you to the styling/hair/make-up/photography departments, for making me look, (if I may borrow what Felicia Chin said to me yesterday at the make-up unit), “vogue”.

Of horses, heels and shit?

SIA1

I love horses.

There is just something in the way a horse is built that oozes with masculinity and strength. When you peer into the eyes of a horse, it tells you the life of that animal. Whether you see a mischievous glint of a sprinter with hooves on fire, or a beast that has spent too much time in a place that doesn’t excite it anymore, their eyes provide us humans with just that glimpse into where their emotions reside.

I fantasise about owning a horse and riding it the way racers do on racing day because when man and animal work together, dreams are conquered and sweet victory lingers long after the horse returns to its stable. In Singapore, there are no horse ranches and riding clubs are rather exclusive, so my best chance of watching thoroughbreds would be at the Singapore Turf Club. I’ve only been to the Singapore Turf Club once and had to sadly turn down the recent invitation to world-class horse racing on the 17th of May due to my work commitments. I was however, very privileged to be invited to a gala dinner on the 15th at the Pan Pacific hosted by Singapore Airlines and Singapore Turf Club as part of the Singapore International Race festival leading up to the SIA Cup race day.

SIA2

Mr Huang Cheng Eng, Executive Vice President, Marketing & The Regions, SIA had the crowds applauding with his "shit" jokes.

It was a night of good food, good entertainment and good company, but what I took home with me went beyond the tangibles. It was the speech by Mr Huang Cheng Eng that really left a deep impression. In fact, most people in the room hung on to every word of his speech. Why? Because his jokes were shit.

Wait a minute, I don’t mean to be rude, but the man designed his speech deliberately so! He actually had management parables, some disguised as “shit” jokes, told to him by the various horses that were competing on Sunday when he went to visit their stables. His humour caught the guests by surprise who were nodding and laughing with applause. Some of you might have heard of these stories, but just in case you haven’t, the gist of his speech contained the following parables, in no particular order.

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! Soon, a farmer passed by and heard the little bird chirping. Seeing the poor creature covered with dung, he decided to help the bird get out of the mess and placed it under a shrub. By this time, the bird was feeling warm and chirpy. and A cat passing by heard the sounds, saw the bird and ate it up.

Morals of the story?
1) Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy.
2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
3) When you’re in deep shit, it might be better just to keep your mouth shut.

A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.” “Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.” The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.  Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

The moral of the story?
Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?” The crow answered: “Sure, why not.” So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

The moral of the story?
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

A priest was driving along and saw a nun on the side of the road, he stopped and offered her a lift which she gladly accepted. She got in and Crossed her legs, forcing her gown to open and reveal a lovely leg. The priest had a look and nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun looked at him and immediately said, “Father, remember psalm 129?” The priest was flustered and apologized profusely. He forced himself to remove his hand. However, he was unable to remove his eyes from her leg. Further on, while changing gear, he let his hand slide up leg again. The nun once again said, “Father, remember psalm 129?” Once again the priest apologized. “Sorry sister, but the mind is weak.” Arriving at the convent, the nun got out, gave him a meaningful glance and went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to retrieve a bible and looked up psalm129. It said, “Go forth and seek; further up, and you will find glory.”

The moral of the story?
Always be well informed in your job; Or you might miss a great opportunity.

These horseshoes were designed to kick start the Singapore International Festival with something a little more colourful and fun, and it couldn't have been more attention grabbing.

SIA10

Kudos to Tata, the photographer who had to step in rhythm with the escalator in order to get this picture.

This is what you get when you put two of my favourite things together — horses and high heels. While horses exude the charisma of strength and agility which I associate with men, heels simply ooze sex appeal, which I associate with women. The way heels are made, the curves of the body, the girth of the heel, the materials used and finishing are immaculately put together to flatter the feminine silhouette. These Fashionista Horseshoes are the perfect epitome of masculinity and femininity combined.

There were ten of these horseshoes measuring seven feet and painted in various fashion themes to kickstart the Singapore International Race Festival, but only two displayed outside the ballroom. Nonetheless, it was quite an eye-opener.

SIA11

SIA12

Look closely and you'll see the ingenious marriage of the horse and the heel, making it look like an oxford shoe.

The surprise of the evening, as put forth by the host, was the dessert buffet, the fortune teller and the man who writes Calligraphy on Chinese fans. By the end of the main course, which was  a lovely steak, everyone was ready to have a picture with one another over a macaroon or two. The atmosphere was cordial and relaxed which reminded me of my college prom night where everyone would crowd together and take pictures.

Many people had the names of their horses written.

The fortune teller would ask for your name and then tells the parrot, "Pick a card for so-and-so". The little bird will totter out of the cage, use its beak to separate 1 card out from the deck and totter back to its cage.

For friends around the world who came down specially for the race, it was a night that sparkled with merriment, a prequel to the highly charged, adrenalin-pumping action that was taking place on Sunday. Since I couldn’t be there to support my favourite horses, here’s what Felicia witnessed on race day.

That night I met some very wonderful people. From the SQ girls who greeted the guests by the door, the dedicated waiters and waitresses serving our tables, to the jovial friends from around the world and of course, the hospitable hosts from Singapore Airlines and Singapore Turf Club. Thank you for the lovely evening and hopefully I can be there on race day to watch the horses compete next year.

Weekend of Celebrations

This weekend was full of celebrations. First it was Vesak Day where I was down at Courts Megastore for a short appearance. Then Sunday was Mother’s Day where I decided to cook for my mom as a way of celebrating. The special dish: Sweet and sour prawns. I didn’t take any photographs because I had to clean up the kitchen and the dish was pretty much finished by my family before I thought of snapping a photo. I ripped the recipe off the here . Quite easy to follow and taste pretty decent!
